Drawing expressively withcharcoal, ink and water has recently led me to painting. These pieces explorethe shifting tides and atmospheres over the tense and captivating point betweenland, sea and sky. The presence or absence of a horizon in ones viewstimulates ideas and questions of the future - drawing ones attention to theinfinity of nature. Jay Appleton in TheExperience of Landscape, discusses how contemplating the horizon directsattention: ‘particularly to speculation about what liesbeyond it, and the horizon itself seems to be the key which can provide theanswer to such speculation’. Creating these pieces was an act of contemplation of colour, light and atmosphere and have helped me to speculate and meditate on my place in nature and my relationship to something beyond thehorizon.
